1026     Health and Wellness     .5 credit     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course will expose students to a wide variety of health-related topics such as analyzing and recognizing healthful and risky behaviors, demonstrating how to respond to harmful situations, and developing refusal skills. In addition, students will learn how to make informed decisions, promote and develop healthy relationships, set goals, and make healthy food choices. Students will also learn how to identify illegal drugs and identify causes, signs, symptoms, and treatments for common illnesses.

The 7th grade health class covers physical, social and mental/emotional health. A variety of topics are covered in this class including: nutrition, conflict resolution skills, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, communicable and non-communicable diseases, human sexuality, fitness and first aid.

This is an advanced class.  This class is designed to complete one OUTSTANDING product:  OUR YEARBOOK.  Students desiring to be on the staff should excel at one or more of the following skills: writing, art, design, computer, business, budgeting, and/or photography.  Responsibilities include selling ads, designing pages, writing copy, selling books, taking photographs and more.  Desirable character traits - which will be cultivated in this class - include the ability to work with others and independently, perseverance, patience, leadership, flexibility, and organizational ability.  Staff members must also have the ability to follow instructions, to work under pressure, and to solve problems creatively.  A willingness to do more than the bare minimum with the commitment of excellence is also necessary. 

Prerequisite:   Yearbook staff members will be chosen from students who complete an application which will include a writing sample and recommendations from three teachers.  A limited number of sophomores will be selected.

1269     Intro to Peer Mentoring     .5 Credit     Grades 11, 12

Students will start the Semester with some basics in education and classroom management.  Theorists and learning stages will be covered. Communication and professionalism will also be addressed. Students will be assigned a cooperating teacher and or student for their hands on practicum.

Mentors are typically assigned a student or group of students who have difficulty with their academics. Mentors assist such student(s) in the classroom by guiding their note taking, re-teaching or reviewing concepts, prompting students to pay attention and remain focused on classroom activities, facilitating group work, reporting behaviors, and maintaining a daily journal.

Enrollment in this course is subject to supervisor discretion.

Prerequisite:  Minimum GPA of 2.5, including no grade less than C for at least one year.

No behavioral incidents on record for at least one year.

1270    Peer Mentor    .5 Credit    Grades 11, 12

The REACH Program is an elective course designed to assist students in grades 7 and 8 who may need support academically, socially, and/or emotionally.  The goal is to help students experience success by learning new life skills to overcome barriers and/or challenges present in their lives and succeed in high school. The class will consist of a small group of students, working with an instructor, who will work closely with the larger team of administrant, guidance counselors, and others as needed.  While some class time will be dedicated to learning new skills, some time will be set aside for working on assignments for other classes. REACH will teach students how to empower themselves with a "toolbox" of skills.

The REACH Program not only supports students academically, but also helps students to build skills necessary to become successful in their school career.

1282C     REACH 9     .5 Credit     Grade 9

The REACH Program is an elective course designed to assist students in grade 9 who may need support academically, socially, and/or emotionally.  The goal is to help students experience success by learning new life skills to overcome barriers and/or challenges present in their lives and become confident young adults. REACH 9 will build on the skills learned in REACH 7 & 8, however these classes are not a pre-requisite for REACH 9. REACH 9 will teach communication skills, conflict resolution, and other skills students need as they are starting to think about getting a job and where their lives are leading.

The REACH program not only supports students academically, but also helps students to build skills necessary to become successful adults after graduation.

1282D     REACH 10-12     .5 Credit     Grades 10, 11, 12

The REACH program is an elective course designed to assist students in grades 10-12 who may need support academically, socially, and/or emotionally.  The goal is to help students experience success by learning new life skills to overcome barriers and/or challenges present in their lives and become confident young adults. REACH 10-12 will build on the skills learned in the other REACH courses, however, these classes are not a pre-requisite for REACH 10-12. REACH 10-12 will teach skills necessary for students entering the adult world such as public speaking, conflict resolution, advocating for oneself, and self-sufficiency. 

The REACH program not only supports students academically, but also helps students to build skills necessary to become successful adults after graduation.

1292     WORK SEMINAR     0.5 Credit      Grades 11-12 

This is a self-paced, online course that students must complete prior to registering for Work-based Learning or the School to Work Program.  This course provides supplementary training in the world of work such as: job responsibility, work relationships, gender issues, aptitude and personality analysis, goal setting, job research, resume preparation, personal living skills, job support, and other issues that may be identified in the workplace.
 
*Students interested in a Work Release or WBL credits in the Fall of 2021 will need to complete this during the summer and prior to the start of the 2021-2022 school year*
 

1550     Student Technology Support     .5 Credit     Grades 10, 11, 12

This hands on class will focus not only on acquiring technical and digital skills, but will also offer communication, leadership and collaboration skills. Students will learn how to troubleshoot issues that arise with technology use in the classroom. Students will also gain experience with producing, managing, and creating digital media by building tutorials and assisting extra curricular activities and sports with their technological needs including recording events and being a part of play by play productions for some sports. *An application is required to be completed and approved by the TIS committee for admission into this course.
