Students who have successfully completed the following entry level art classes may repeat the course for an additional semester as advanced students if they acquire signed consent from the instructor prior to registration:  Drawing, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Pottery & Sculpture, Watercolor, & Oil Painting.

Advanced Photography (Photography II) and Advanced Graphic Design (Graphic Design II), formerly Computer Graphics, are offered as separate courses.  See your art instructor or counselor for more information.

Classes numbered “190” are independent study art classes.  Students must have earned an B- in the previous art class of the given media, must receive written teacher permission and must have an excellent attendance record in order to register as an independent study student.  See your art instructor or counselor for more information.

108           Art 8    .5 Credit    Grade 8

Eighth grade art is designed for the well-rounded student motivated to learn. The class will focus on developing creativity, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. We will be focusing on the “Elements and Principals” of Art and Design and how they become the building blocks for artistic compositions. Students will be introduced to different art materials, techniques and processes. Each material used will give students a brief chance to work with a media that they may choose to take for credit in the senior high.  They will be introduced to the history of art styles and learn how each has evolved over the centuries. They will also familiarize themselves with artistic from the past and learn how those individuals helped to visually document history. Students will leave this class having a better appreciation for creating art, understanding the processes, and having a better knowledge of the past.

120           Pottery I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This is an ideal course for those individuals who really like to handle clay! Basic hand-built pottery techniques will include the pinch, coil and slab methods. Along with glazing techniques to help bring your work to life. Students may also be introduced to the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel.

121           Pottery II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

Advanced techniques in Pottery: This course is designed for the student who has the maturity and skills to work on developing his/her style. A large body of work will be completed. Pottery will be created on the wheel and possible combination of wheel and hand building. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1. Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique.

125     Sculpture I     .5 Credit     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This class is designed for students who want to try their hand at creating 3-dimensional art. Students will learn the fundamentals of Sculpture allowing them to create unique and interesting sculptures. Art History will also be a part of this class focusing on Artists who are well known Sculptors.

126     Sculpture II     .5 Credit Grades 10, 11, 12

This class is designed for students who want to advance their knowledge and abilities in producing 3-dimensional art. This course is designed for the student who has the maturity and skills to work on developing his/her style. Students will continue to push their knowledge of Sculpture allowing them to create unique and interesting sculptures. Art History will also be a part of this class focusing on Artists who are well known Sculptors.

130      Graphic Design I    .5 Credit   Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 

Graphic Design is the art of advertising.  It is the creative use of words and pictures to communicate information.  Graphic artists combine artistic skills with technical training to design logos, business cards, newsletters, album covers, magazine ads, packaging, posters, brochures, etc.  In the Graphic Design classes at Hibbing High School, students learn to integrate creativity with computer technology.  Classes are held in a Macintosh computer lab where students master professional skills using graphic design software: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.  The curriculum includes a heavy emphasis on the elements and principals of graphic design, computer illustration techniques, typography, digital photography, and layout and composition.  Students, therefore, complete the course with impressive portfolios.  Graphic design instructors from area colleges as well as local professional graphic artists serve as guess speakers.  A graphic design education can lead to a rewarding and high creative career!

131           Graphic Design II     .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Graphic Design I and are considering a career as a graphic designer. Students will continue to develop skills using Adobe Creative Cloud Software:  Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.  After a review of the fundamentals of graphic design, more advanced design concepts and techniques are introduced.  Real-world design opportunities allow students to work with clients from the school community and beyond.  This gives students a credible taste of what it is to be a graphic artist.  Typical client-based design projects have included logos, business cards, poster, brochures, booklets and web graphics.  Students are also introduced to area professionals in the graphics field and are provided information on post secondary education opportunities that can further their graphic design education.  This can lead to a rewarding and highly creative career!

140           Drawing and Design I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

EVERYONE can LEARN to draw.  Drawing skills are fundamental to many creative endeavors and is an excellent preparation for future studies in other art classes.  Students learn observation skills which in turn strengthens drawing skills and success.  Artwork focuses on the elements and principles of design and provides many opportunities for students to engage in creative problem solving.  Students will learn how to organize ideas and graphic communication.  A broad range of subject matter, media and processes will be explored.  The course is especially recommended for future graphic students. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique.

141           Drawing and Design II    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Having learned drawing fundamentals in Drawing and Design I, students will engage in more creative problem solving strategies including the complex compositions of E.C. Escher, the drawing strategy of frescoe painter and sculptor Michelangelo, the genius of Leonardo daVinci as well as modern day artists.  Students will continue drawing with a broad range of media including pencil, pen, oil and chalk pastels, while developing drawing skills using man, animal and nature.  The class will make every effort to do one, all day, on-site outside drawing session. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique. 

Prerequisite:  Students enrolling in Drawing and Design II must have taken Drawing and Design 140

145           Watercolor I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

What an opportunity to really express yourself!  Paint with the white of your paper!  Students will learn how to paint loose, fresh watercolors using a variety of techniques.  Individual interpretations will be developed through a series of exercises and paintings designed to learn many different brush strokes and methods of applying paint.  This is a real chance to paint some of those outdoor scenes which you’ve always wanted to try. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. 146           Watercolor II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

This course is designed for the student who has the maturity to work on developing his/her style.  A large body of work will be completed. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique.

Prerequisite: Prior written permission from an Art instructor and Watercolor 145

150           Jewelry I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Design and create your own earrings, rings, bracelets, pendants, pins, and key chains!  This course focuses on wire and bead jewelry making, as well as cute plate metal fabrications.  Processes will include wire wrapping, sawing and piercing polishing and buffing, soldering, riveting, and hammering metal.  Some power tools are used and safety is stressed.

151           Jewelry II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

This course picks up where Jewelry I left off, giving students many opportunities to build upon basic wire and plate metal processes.  This course is designed for the student who has the maturity and skills necessary to work independently.

160           Mixed Media I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Are you an "all around artist", someone who likes to dabble in a variety of art media and processes?  If so, MIXED MEDIA is for you!  Students artists will do everything from papermaking, printmaking, batik (fabric dyeing), weaving, bookmaking, collage, mosaic making and more!!  Project work will incorporate an emphasis on design elements and principles to assure all participants experience success!  Students will maintain a visual journal to document project work - each one original to the student artists.  This class is lots of fun!

161           Mixed Media II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

A continuation of Mixed Media I with a chance for more in-depth art creation.

Prerequisite:  Instructor written consent and successful completion of Mixed Media I 160

165           Acrylic Painting I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 

Grab a brush, a palette dotted with paint and explore a vast myriad of colors.  Basic techniques will be stressed as students explore historical painting eras ranging from traditional perspective, fauvism, impressionism, surrealism, and abstract art.  Students will learn color mixing prior to developing a composition.  This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique.

166           Acrylic Painting II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

Advanced problems in Acrylic Painting:  This course is designed for the student who has the maturity to work on developing his/her style.  A large body of work will be completed. This art class achieves the strands of Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts: 1.  Artistic Foundations: Elements and Principles of Design, 2. Artistic Process: Create or Make, 3. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique.

170     Oil Painting I     .5 Credit     Grades 10, 11, 12

Step into the wonderful world of Oil Painting. This class is designed for students who want to further their interest in painting and try out Oils. The basics of oil painting will be covered along with learning how to stretch canvas. Students will create a large body of work in a variety of styles.

Lab Fee: $20.00 Students will also need to purchase a starter oil paint set through the school (oil paints, palette knife, and brushes)

171     Oil Painting II    .5 Credit     Grades 11, 12

This class is for students who want to further their knowledge of Oil Painting. Further techniques will be taught and students will be encouraged to find their own style of Oil Painting. This course is designed for the student who has the maturity and skills to work on developing his/her style. Students will create a large body of work in a variety of styles.

Prerequisites: Prior written consent from art instructors and Oil Painting I

Lab Fee: $20.00 Students will also need to purchase a starter oil paint set through the school if they do not have one(oil paints, palette knife, and brushes)

180           Photography I    .5 Credit    Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

If you like to take photographs, this course is for you!  The class begins with a study of the history of film photography and progresses all the way up to today's digital age.  Students will learn basic digital camera operation and how to upload and edit their images using Adobe Photoshop.  Emphasis will be placed on quality photographic composition, recognizing that first and foremost, photography is a form of visual art.  Classes typically go on a field trip to shoot pictures!  Students also learn to prepare their work for public display.  Students must furnish their own digital cameras with removable memory card.

181           Photography II    .5 Credit    Grades 10, 11, 12

This course picks up where Photo I leaves off, giving students more opportunities to build upon basic digital photography knowledge.  Students will learn creative experimental Photoshop processes to alter color, opacity, textures, and layering of images.  Special photography assignments are undertaken by the entire class and greater emphasis is placed on preparing work for display.  Students must furnish their own digital camera and removable memory card.

185     Stain Glass     .5 Credit     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This is a great opportunity to learn a lifelong skill! In the class we will explore classic stained glass panels and mosaics. Skills learned will include, glass cutting, soldering, glass grinding, foiling, grozing, mosaics and various art concepts including design, composition, and color theory.

195     Study of Art     .5 Credit     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This class is for the student who needs the Art Credit but isn’t “into” Art. This course will focus on studying Artists who students are interested in and recreating artwork in a similar theme as the artist. This gives the students a chance to learn and try out different styles of Art without focusing on one specific Art medium.
