In German I you will develop learning strategies, knowledge of geography and understanding of cultural diversity.  These are vital tools for learning any language and lifelong navigating in our ever more interconnected world.  We will study the language of the daily life of German speakers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  You will learn the basics of communication in spoken and written German.  Some of the language functions you will acquire include:  making introductions, talking about interests and free time activities, school days, families and home life, expressing opinions, eating in restaurants, making plans and shopping.  German students are automatically members of the German club, an organization that supports activities in the classroom such as the celebration of festivals and food or craft projects and sponsors opportunities outside of the classroom including trips to the Concordia Language Villages.

In German II you will build upon the foundation of German I, and expand your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.  Describing events that took place in the past is one of the skills you will learn.  You will continue to learn about the traditional cultures of and current issues faced by German speakers of Central Europe.  German students are automatically members of the German club, an organization that supports activities in the classroom such as the celebration of festivals and food or craft projects, and sponsors opportunities outside of the classroom including trips to the Concordia Language Villages

In German III you will implement the language skills you developed in your first two years of the language and progress beyond the basics of communication in German.  You will begin to be able to understand more complicated conversations and texts, and learn to express yourself with an emerging fluency in written and spoken German.  The people, ideas and events that have shaped the culture of today’s German speakers and their homes is one of the topics that the class studies through the German language.  German students are automatically members of the German club, an organization that supports activities in the classroom such as the celebration of festivals and food or craft projects, and sponsors opportunities outside of the classroom including trips to the Concordia Language Villages.

In the fourth year of study of German you will hone the skills you gained during your first three years.  You will master some of the finer points of the language and learn to converse with confidence about a wide variety of topics.  The class will discuss issues in German speaking society and analyze longer, more difficult works of literature.  Writing skills will also be stressed.  German students are automatically members of the German club, an organization that supports activities in the classroom such as the celebration of festivals and food or craft projects, and sponsors opportunities outside of the classroom including trips to the Concordia Language Villages.

Spanish Level I emphasizes the four language skills:  listening, speaking, reading and writing.  You will learn Spanish grammar, culture and history as you study the lives of Spanish speakers from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Ecuador and the United States.  Unit themes include meeting people and making friends, family, school schedules and classes, after school activities, hobbies, sports, weather, regional crafts and food, shopping, dinning out, daily routine, housing, professions, country life and bargaining at the market.  Spanish students are automatically members of the Spanish Club, an organization that supports language-learning activities, both in and out of the classroom, as well as international travel.

Prerequisite:          No required GPA for entrance

Spanish II offers the opportunity to reinforce and expand listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  After reviewing basic grammar and vocabulary from Spanish I, the student will learn and use new vocabulary and intermediate grammatical concepts.  New contexts include outdoor activities, entertaining guests, Mexican folk songs, rural and urban life, the home, art, native culture and celebrations of Latin America, the future, and life in the tropics.  Travel to a Spanish speaking country is available.

Spanish III offers the student a review of grammatical concepts and vocabulary necessary to daily events especially conversation.  The student will use and improve speaking and listening skills and writing and reading abilities.  We will read literature to show insights into culture and history.  Readings include short stories, poetry and a short novel.  Other activities include interaction and conversations, written summaries, oral reports and discussions, grammar exercises, videos and video projects.  Spanish III requires the student to work more independently.  Travel to a Spanish speaking country is encouraged and offered.

623A    Spanish IV S1    .5 Credit    Grade 12

623B    Spanish IV S2    .5 Credit    Grade 12

Spanish IV offers a comprehensive review of the language and grammatical structures.  The student will continue to expand and perfect his/her abilities in speaking, reading, writing and listening.  The student will participate in daily conversations and will also study history and culture through literature and videos.  Readings will include short stories, poetry, magazines, mysteries and a novel.  The student will complete grammar exercises, write and give oral summaries of stories, participate in daily discussions and view videos.  Spanish IV requires the student to work more independently.  Travel to a Spanish speaking country is encouraged and offered.
