New Superintendent Profile

The New Superintendent Profile was developed utilizing the opinions expressed by School Board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents and other community members during individual and focus group interviews and at a community forum regarding goals for the District, the district’s greatest strengths and challenges, and the attributes, skills and characteristics desired in the new superintendent. Also utilized were the responses to a survey available through the District’s website.
The consultants will utilize the New Superintendent Profile in recruiting and screening potential superintendent candidates. The Board and community are encourage to use the Profile as they interview and evaluate candidates to determine how well they fit the current leadership needs of the District.
ATTRIBUTES DESIRED IN THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT
HIBBING PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The new superintendent should be a person who:
1) Is a goal-oriented, visionary leader who works with all constituents to develop a strategic plan for the district and leads in a manner that facilitates full implementation.
2) Is an instructional leader with a strong background in curriculum articulation and instructional best practices, is an advocate for all students, and strongly supports a focus on academic excellence and the development of programs to meet a wide range of student needs.
3) Has the leadership skill to create an environment in which disparate groups will begin to work together in a collaborative manner.
4) Has a commitment to creating alliances with industry, colleges and other institutions with the intention of expanding educational opportunities for all learners in the school district.
5) Understands and supports the utilization of technology to enhance instruction, improve efficiency, and expand avenues of communication.
6) Is a visible and active leader in the schools and community who is approachable, and someone who develops strong connections with staff, parents, other educational institutions, governmental agencies, legislators, businesses and community organizations to enhance services and build effective partnerships.
7) Is a leader who motivates others, sets high expectations, makes difficult decisions, has excellent follow-through, delegates appropriate authority, and holds others accountable while building a cohesive and effective team.
8) Has expertise in Human Resource administration including hiring, supervision, personnel law, contract negotiations and administration, and staff development.
9) Is an excellent communicator and spokesperson for the district through effective speaking, writing, listening, and the use of technology that effectively markets the district and enhances community support.
10) Values and supports strong student activity programs designed to enhance student achievement and build community involvement and support.
11) The ability to be a regional leader that helps the entire Iron Range area aspire to provide the best overall educational possible.
12) Has a strong understanding of school finance, will chart a course of fiscal accountability, and is adept at exploring creative ways to support educational programs.
13) Will bring a “customer service” focus to the internal and external interactions with district stakeholders.
14) Will enjoy living and working in northern Minnesota.
