SUBJECT: 513 Promotion, Retention, and Grading

The school district shall support the expectation that all students will achieve at an acceptable level of proficiency.  Parental assistance, tutorial and remedial programs, counseling and other appropriate services shall be coordinated and utilized to the greatest extent possible to help students succeed in school.

Promotion
Students who achieve at levels deemed acceptable by local and state standards shall be promoted to the next grade level at the completion of each school year.

Retention
Retention of a student may be considered when professional staff and parents believe that it is in the best interest of the student.  Physical development, maturity, and emotional factors shall be considered as well as scholastic achievement.  The retention of a student must involve teacher, parents, a child study team, and the principal.  Before a final decision is made, a conference with the parent(s) or guardian(s) is required.  The superintendent’s decision shall be final.

Grading
Students shall be graded on achievement of the objectives of the course and professional judgment of the teacher.

The superintendent shall be responsible for the design and implementation of a reporting system of student progress at all grade levels.
