Infrastructure

There are four school buildings and a bus garage in the Hibbing School District. Each building is connected with a 10 gigabit fiber network. All of the servers are located in the data center at the High School. The district has a robust wireless network in all schools capable of supporting 1:1 connectivity, and has standardized on the Macintosh and iPad platform.

Switching and Wireless

The Technology Department operates the school district's network using HP ProCurve switches. There are four core switches and 28 edge switches, spread across 26 technology closets.

The network backbone operates at 10Gbps and provides PoE to support wireless and VoIP.

Our wireless network of over 250 Aerohive access points supports a high-density, 1:1 iPad iititaive.

Data Center

The district's data center houses several servers, providing educational and collaborative services. The data center has a dedicated electrical feed, conditioned by an APC UPS power distribution system, as well as a dedicated air conditioning system that is monitored by environmental monitoring equipment. The data center provides firewall, Internet content filtering, file sharing and backup services.

Phone System

The district manages approximately 300 Polycom VoIP phones and manages a centralized Sangoma PBX with redundancy.

The PBX provides sophisticated voice routing and management capabilities such as ring groups, auto attendant, dial plans, voicemail, and paging services in a simple to use interface.

Desktop and Mobile Clients

The Technology Department currently manages approximately 350 iMac desktop computers and 3,000 iPads. Each student K through 12 has their own iPad. We use JAMF Casper Suite to manage both platforms.

In addition to the iPads for each student, the district also has computer labs as necessary for specific classroom instruction, such as CAD and graphic arts.

Classroom Technology

Each classroom in the district (approximately 125) has a PolyVision eno interactive whiteboard (with an Epson ultra-short-throw projector) and an audio enhancement system.

The PolyVision eno whiteboards are made from ceramic coated steel. This allows them to be used as a high-quality dry-erase whiteboard with support for magnetic manipulatives in addition to the system's interactive features. Teachers can display their desktop computers (as well as remotely control them from the interactive whiteboard), any classroom iPad (wirelessly), or an auxiliary video input on the board.

The audio enhancement system includes four ceiling-mounted speakers, two wireless microphones and an amp with auxiliary inputs. The teacher microphone can be worn around the neck from a lanyard and includes buttons for volume control of the audio sources as well as mute buttons. The amp provides amplification for the microphones, computer (or iPad), and one auxiliary input.

Print & Scan Services

The Technology Department manages 72 networked printers/copiers.

Currently the majority of our printers are networked HP Laserjet printers, but the district is moving away from networked printers and towards networked copiers.

We currently have eighteen Ricoh copiers with network scan and print services. The copiers utilize RFID badges to retrieve secure "follow me" print jobs. Users can also scan documents directly to their personal email mailbox by swiping their ID badge.
